Surah Ghafir Recitation, Translation, and Tafseer - The Holy Quran

40:41

وَ یٰقَوْمِ مَا لِیْۤ اَدْعُوْكُمْ اِلَى النَّجٰوةِ وَ تَدْعُوْنَنِیْۤ اِلَى النَّارِؕ(۴۱)

O my people, what is wrong with me that I am calling you to preservation, while you invite me to the Fire!

O my people, how is it with me, that I call you to salvation, and you call me to the Fire?

40:42

تَدْعُوْنَنِیْ لِاَكْفُرَ بِاللّٰهِ وَ اُشْرِكَ بِهٖ مَا لَیْسَ لِیْ بِهٖ عِلْمٌ٘-وَّ اَنَا اَدْعُوْكُمْ اِلَى الْعَزِیْزِ الْغَفَّارِ(۴۲)

You are asking me to disbelieve in God, and to associate with Him that of which I have no knowledge, yet I invite you to the all-mighty, all-forgiving.

You call me to disbelieve in God, and to associate with Him that whereof I have no knowledge, while I call you to the All-mighty, the All-forgiving.

40:43

لَا جَرَمَ اَنَّمَا تَدْعُوْنَنِیْۤ اِلَیْهِ لَیْسَ لَهٗ دَعْوَةٌ فِی الدُّنْیَا وَ لَا فِی الْاٰخِرَةِ وَ اَنَّ مَرَدَّنَاۤ اِلَى اللّٰهِ وَ اَنَّ الْمُسْرِفِیْنَ هُمْ اَصْحٰبُ النَّارِ(۴۳)

What you are calling me to is surely not worth the calling in this world or in the next, because our returning is to God; and because the transgressors will be inmates of Hell.

No doubt that what you call me to has no call heard, in this world or in the world to come, that to God we return, and that the prodigal are the inhabitants of the Fire.

40:44

فَسَتَذْكُرُوْنَ مَاۤ اَقُوْلُ لَكُمْؕ-وَ اُفَوِّضُ اَمْرِیْۤ اِلَى اللّٰهِؕ-اِنَّ اللّٰهَ بَصِیْرٌۢ بِالْعِبَادِ(۴۴)

You will remember what I say in time to come; I submit my case to the judgement of God. Surely God keeps an eye on His creatures."

You will remember what I say to you. I commit my affair to God; surely God sees His servants.'

40:45

فَوَقٰىهُ اللّٰهُ سَیِّاٰتِ مَا مَكَرُوْا وَ حَاقَ بِاٰلِ فِرْعَوْنَ سُوْٓءُ الْعَذَابِۚ(۴۵)

So God preserved him from the evil they were planning; and a dreadful doom encompassed the people of Pharaoh:

So God guarded him against the evil things of their devising, and there encompassed the folk of Pharaoh the evil chastisement,

40:46

اَلنَّارُ یُعْرَضُوْنَ عَلَیْهَا غُدُوًّا وَّ عَشِیًّاۚ-وَ یَوْمَ تَقُوْمُ السَّاعَةُ- اَدْخِلُوْۤا اٰلَ فِرْعَوْنَ اَشَدَّ الْعَذَابِ(۴۶)

Fire, to which they are exposed morning and evening. The day the Hour is proclaimed (it will be said:) "Admit the people of Pharaoh to the severest punishment,"

the Fire, to which they shall be exposed morning and evening; and on the day when the Hour is come: 'Admit the folk of Pharaoh into the most terrible chastisement!'

40:47

وَ اِذْ یَتَحَآجُّوْنَ فِی النَّارِ فَیَقُوْلُ الضُّعَفٰٓؤُا لِلَّذِیْنَ اسْتَكْبَرُوْۤا اِنَّا كُنَّا لَكُمْ تَبَعًا فَهَلْ اَنْتُمْ مُّغْنُوْنَ عَنَّا نَصِیْبًا مِّنَ النَّارِ(۴۷)

As they will noisily argue in the Fire, the weaker ones will say to the arrogant: "We were your followers, so will you take over some of our share of the fire?"

And when they argue one with the other in the Fire, and the weak say unto those who waxed proud, 'Why, we were your followers; will you avail us now against any part of the Fire?'

40:48

قَالَ الَّذِیْنَ اسْتَكْبَرُوْۤا اِنَّا كُلٌّ فِیْهَاۤۙ-اِنَّ اللّٰهَ قَدْ حَكَمَ بَیْنَ الْعِبَادِ(۴۸)

The arrogant will answer: "All of us are in it. Surely God has judged between His creatures."

Then those who waxed proud shall say, 'Every one of us is in it; indeed, God already has passed judgment between His servants.'

40:49

وَ قَالَ الَّذِیْنَ فِی النَّارِ لِخَزَنَةِ جَهَنَّمَ ادْعُوْا رَبَّكُمْ یُخَفِّفْ عَنَّا یَوْمًا مِّنَ الْعَذَابِ(۴۹)

Those in the Fire will say to the warders of Hell: "Ask your Lord to reduce the punishment by a day for us."

And those who are in the Fire will say to the keepers of Gehenna, 'Call on your Lord, to lighten for us one day of the chastisement!'

40:50

قَالُوْۤا اَوَ لَمْ تَكُ تَاْتِیْكُمْ رُسُلُكُمْ بِالْبَیِّنٰتِؕ-قَالُوْا بَلٰىؕ-قَالُوْا فَادْعُوْاۚ-وَ مَا دُعٰٓؤُا الْكٰفِرِیْنَ اِلَّا فِیْ ضَلٰلٍ۠(۵۰)

They will say: "Did not your apostles come to you with clear proofs?" They will answer: "Indeed, they did." "Then pray," will (the warders) say. But the praying of unbelievers will be all in vain.

They shall say, 'Did not your Messengers bring you the clear signs?' They shall say, 'Yes indeed.' They shall say, 'Then do you call!' But the calling of the unbelievers is only in error.

40:51

اِنَّا لَنَنْصُرُ رُسُلَنَا وَ الَّذِیْنَ اٰمَنُوْا فِی الْحَیٰوةِ الدُّنْیَا وَ یَوْمَ یَقُوْمُ الْاَشْهَادُۙ(۵۱)

We will certainly help Our messengers and those who believe, in this world, and on the day the witnesses take their stand,

Surely We shall help Our Messengers and those who have believed, in the present life, and upon the day when the witnesses arise,

40:52

یَوْمَ لَا یَنْفَعُ الظّٰلِمِیْنَ مَعْذِرَتُهُمْ وَ لَهُمُ اللَّعْنَةُ وَ لَهُمْ سُوْٓءُ الدَّارِ(۵۲)

The day upon which their excuses will not benefit the evil-doers, and the condemnation and evil abode will be theirs.

upon the day when their excuses shall not profit the evildoers, and theirs shall be the curse, and theirs the evil abode.

40:53

وَ لَقَدْ اٰتَیْنَا مُوْسَى الْهُدٰى وَ اَوْرَثْنَا بَنِیْۤ اِسْرَآءِیْلَ الْكِتٰبَۙ(۵۳)

Verily We showed Moses the way, and bequeathed the Book to the children of Israel,

We also gave Moses the guidance, and We bequeathed upon the Children of Israel the Book

40:54

هُدًى وَّ ذِكْرٰى لِاُولِی الْاَلْبَابِ(۵۴)

A guidance and reminder for men of wisdom.

for a guidance and for a reminder to men possessed of minds.

40:55

فَاصْبِرْ اِنَّ وَعْدَ اللّٰهِ حَقٌّ وَّ اسْتَغْفِرْ لِذَنْۢبِكَ وَ سَبِّحْ بِحَمْدِ رَبِّكَ بِالْعَشِیِّ وَ الْاِبْكَارِ(۵۵)

So persevere; the promise of God is true; and seek forgiveness for your sins, and chant the praises of your Lord evening and morning.

So be thou patient; surely God's promise is true. And ask forgiveness for thy sin, and proclaim the praise of thy Lord at evening and dawn.

40:56

اِنَّ الَّذِیْنَ یُجَادِلُوْنَ فِیْۤ اٰیٰتِ اللّٰهِ بِغَیْرِ سُلْطٰنٍ اَتٰىهُمْۙ-اِنْ فِیْ صُدُوْرِهِمْ اِلَّا كِبْرٌ مَّا هُمْ بِبَالِغِیْهِۚ-فَاسْتَعِذْ بِاللّٰهِؕ-اِنَّهٗ هُوَ السَّمِیْعُ الْبَصِیْرُ(۵۶)

Verily those who argue in the matter of God´s revelations, without authority having reached them, have nothing but pride in their hearts, and they will not achieve their end. So take refuge in God: Surely He is all-hearing and all-seeing.

Those who dispute concerning the signs of God, without any authority come to them, in their breasts is only pride, that they shall never attain. So seek thou refuge in God; surely He is the All-hearing, the All-seeing.

40:57

لَخَلْقُ السَّمٰوٰتِ وَ الْاَرْضِ اَكْبَرُ مِنْ خَلْقِ النَّاسِ وَ لٰكِنَّ اَكْثَرَ النَّاسِ لَا یَعْلَمُوْنَ(۵۷)

The creation of the heavens and the earth is indeed of greater magnitude than the creation of mankind; but most men do not understand.

Certainly the creation of the heavens and earth is greater than the creation of men; but most men know it not.

40:58

وَ مَا یَسْتَوِی الْاَعْمٰى وَ الْبَصِیْرُ ﳔ وَ الَّذِیْنَ اٰمَنُوْا وَ عَمِلُوا الصّٰلِحٰتِ وَ لَا الْمُسِیْٓءُؕ-قَلِیْلًا مَّا تَتَذَكَّرُوْنَ(۵۸)

The blind and the seeing are surely not alike, nor those who believe and act rightly and those who do evil. Little do you reflect!

Not equal are the blind and the seeing man, those who believe and do deeds of righteousness, and the wrong-doer. Little do you reflect.

40:59

اِنَّ السَّاعَةَ لَاٰتِیَةٌ لَّا رَیْبَ فِیْهَا وَ لٰكِنَّ اَكْثَرَ النَّاسِ لَا یُؤْمِنُوْنَ(۵۹)

The Hour will certainly come; there is no mystery about it; but most men do not believe.

The Hour is coming, no doubt of it, but most men do not believe.

40:60

وَ قَالَ رَبُّكُمُ ادْعُوْنِیْۤ اَسْتَجِبْ لَكُمْؕ-اِنَّ الَّذِیْنَ یَسْتَكْبِرُوْنَ عَنْ عِبَادَتِیْ سَیَدْخُلُوْنَ جَهَنَّمَ دٰخِرِیْنَ۠(۶۰)

Your Lord has said: "Call to Me that I may answer your call. Surely those who disdain worshipping Me will enter Hell, disgraced."

Your Lord has said, 'Call upon Me and I will answer you. Surely those who wax too proud to do Me service shall enter Gehenna utterly abject.'

40:61

اَللّٰهُ الَّذِیْ جَعَلَ لَكُمُ الَّیْلَ لِتَسْكُنُوْا فِیْهِ وَ النَّهَارَ مُبْصِرًاؕ-اِنَّ اللّٰهَ لَذُوْ فَضْلٍ عَلَى النَّاسِ وَ لٰكِنَّ اَكْثَرَ النَّاسِ لَا یَشْكُرُوْنَ(۶۱)

It is God who made the night for you to rest, the day to make things visible. Indeed God is gracious to men, but most men are not grateful.

It is God who made for you the night, to repose in it, and the day, to see. Surely God is bountiful to men, but most men are not thankful.

40:62

ذٰلِكُمُ اللّٰهُ رَبُّكُمْ خَالِقُ كُلِّ شَیْءٍۘ-لَاۤ اِلٰهَ اِلَّا هُوَۚ-٘ فَاَنّٰى تُؤْفَكُوْنَ(۶۲)

He is God your Lord, creator of everything. There is no god but He. How then do you turn away (from Him)?

That then is God, your Lord, the Creator of everything; there is no god but He. How then are you perverted?

40:63

كَذٰلِكَ یُؤْفَكُ الَّذِیْنَ كَانُوْا بِاٰیٰتِ اللّٰهِ یَجْحَدُوْنَ(۶۳)

Only they are turned away thus who deny the signs of God.

Even so perverted are they who deny the signs of God.

40:64

اَللّٰهُ الَّذِیْ جَعَلَ لَكُمُ الْاَرْضَ قَرَارًا وَّ السَّمَآءَ بِنَآءً وَّ صَوَّرَكُمْ فَاَحْسَنَ صُوَرَكُمْ وَ رَزَقَكُمْ مِّنَ الطَّیِّبٰتِؕ-ذٰلِكُمُ اللّٰهُ رَبُّكُمْ ۚۖ-فَتَبٰرَكَ اللّٰهُ رَبُّ الْعٰلَمِیْنَ(۶۴)

It is God who made the earth a dwelling for you, and the sky a vaulted roof, who fashioned you and gave you excellent form and provided you with clean and wholesome things. He is God, your Lord. So blessed be God, the Lord of all the worlds.

It is God who made for you the earth a fixed place and heaven for an edifice; And He shaped you, and shaped you well, and provided you with the good things. That then is God, your Lord, so blessed be God, the Lord of all Being.

40:65

هُوَ الْحَیُّ لَاۤ اِلٰهَ اِلَّا هُوَ فَادْعُوْهُ مُخْلِصِیْنَ لَهُ الدِّیْنَؕ-اَلْحَمْدُ لِلّٰهِ رَبِّ الْعٰلَمِیْنَ(۶۵)

He is the living. There is no god but He. Therefore pray to Him with obedience all-exclusive. Praise be to God, the Lord of all the worlds.

He is the Living One; there is no god but He. So call upon Him, making your religion His sincerely. Praise belongs to God, the Lord of all Being.

40:66

قُلْ اِنِّیْ نُهِیْتُ اَنْ اَعْبُدَ الَّذِیْنَ تَدْعُوْنَ مِنْ دُوْنِ اللّٰهِ لَمَّا جَآءَنِیَ الْبَیِّنٰتُ مِنْ رَّبِّیْ٘-وَ اُمِرْتُ اَنْ اُسْلِمَ لِرَبِّ الْعٰلَمِیْنَ(۶۶)

Say: "I am forbidden to worship those you call apart from God, since clear signs have come to me from my Lord, and I am commanded to submit to the Lord of all the worlds."

Say: 'I am forbidden to serve those you call on apart from God once the clear signs came to me from my Lord; and I am commanded to surrender to the Lord of All Being.'

40:67

هُوَ الَّذِیْ خَلَقَكُمْ مِّنْ تُرَابٍ ثُمَّ مِنْ نُّطْفَةٍ ثُمَّ مِنْ عَلَقَةٍ ثُمَّ یُخْرِجُكُمْ طِفْلًا ثُمَّ لِتَبْلُغُوْۤا اَشُدَّكُمْ ثُمَّ لِتَكُوْنُوْا شُیُوْخًاۚ-وَ مِنْكُمْ مَّنْ یُّتَوَفّٰى مِنْ قَبْلُ وَ لِتَبْلُغُوْۤا اَجَلًا مُّسَمًّى وَّ لَعَلَّكُمْ تَعْقِلُوْنَ(۶۷)

It is He who created you from dust, then a drop of semen, then the embryo; afterwards He brings you forth as a child; then you attain the age of manhood, and then reach old age. But some of you die before you reach the appointed term that you may haply understand.

It is He who created you of dust then of a sperm-drop, then of a blood-clot, then He delivers you as infants, then that you may come of age, then that you may be old men -- though some of you there are who die before it -- and that you may reach a stated term; haply you will understand.

40:68

هُوَ الَّذِیْ یُحْیٖ وَ یُمِیْتُۚ-فَاِذَا قَضٰۤى اَمْرًا فَاِنَّمَا یَقُوْلُ لَهٗ كُنْ فَیَكُوْنُ۠(۶۸)

It is He who gives you life and death. When He creates a thing, He has only to say: "Be," and it is.

It is He who gives life, and makes to die; and when He decrees a thing, He but says to it 'Be,' and it is.

40:69

اَلَمْ تَرَ اِلَى الَّذِیْنَ یُجَادِلُوْنَ فِیْۤ اٰیٰتِ اللّٰهِؕ-اَنّٰى یُصْرَفُوْنَ ﳝ(۶۹)

Have you not seen how those who dispute the signs of God are turned away?

Hast thou not regarded those who dispute concerning the signs of God, how they are turned about?

40:70

الَّذِیْنَ كَذَّبُوْا بِالْكِتٰبِ وَ بِمَاۤ اَرْسَلْنَا بِهٖ رُسُلَنَا ﱡ فَسَوْفَ یَعْلَمُوْنَۙ(۷۰)

Those who deny the Book and what We have sent down with Our apostles, will soon come to know

Those who cry lies to the Book and that wherewith We sent Our Messengers -- soon they will know!

40:71

اِذِ الْاَغْلٰلُ فِیْۤ اَعْنَاقِهِمْ وَ السَّلٰسِلُؕ-یُسْحَبُوْنَۙ(۷۱)

When, with (iron) collars and chains around their necks, they will be dragged

When the fetters and chains are on their necks, and they dragged

40:72

فِی الْحَمِیْمِ ﳔ ثُمَّ فِی النَّارِ یُسْجَرُوْنَۚ(۷۲)

Through boiling water, and then burnt in the Fire.

into the boiling water, then into the Fire they are poured;

40:73

ثُمَّ قِیْلَ لَهُمْ اَیْنَ مَا كُنْتُمْ تُشْرِكُوْنَۙ(۷۳)

They will then be asked: "Where are they you took as partners

then it is said to them, 'Where are those you associated, apart from God?'

40:74

مِنْ دُوْنِ اللّٰهِؕ-قَالُوْا ضَلُّوْا عَنَّا بَلْ لَّمْ نَكُنْ نَّدْعُوْا مِنْ قَبْلُ شَیْــٴًـاؕ-كَذٰلِكَ یُضِلُّ اللّٰهُ الْكٰفِرِیْنَ(۷۴)

Apart from God?" They will answer: "They have left us in the lurch and fled. In fact it was nothing that we prayed to before." That is how God sends the unbelievers astray.

They shall say, 'They have gone astray from us; nay, but it was nothing at all that we called upon aforetime.' Even so God leads astray the unbelievers.

40:75

ذٰلِكُمْ بِمَا كُنْتُمْ تَفْرَحُوْنَ فِی الْاَرْضِ بِغَیْرِ الْحَقِّ وَ بِمَا كُنْتُمْ تَمْرَحُوْنَۚ(۷۵)

"This is so because you went about exulting wrongfully in the land," (will they be told), "and you were insolent.

'That is because you rejoiced in the earth without right, and were exultant.

40:76

اُدْخُلُوْۤا اَبْوَابَ جَهَنَّمَ خٰلِدِیْنَ فِیْهَاۚ-فَبِئْسَ مَثْوَى الْمُتَكَبِّرِیْنَ(۷۶)

So enter the gates of Hell to abide in it for ever." How evil the abode of the arrogant!

Enter the gates of Gehenna, to dwell therein forever.' How evil is the lodging of those that are proud!

40:77

فَاصْبِرْ اِنَّ وَعْدَ اللّٰهِ حَقٌّۚ-فَاِمَّا نُرِیَنَّكَ بَعْضَ الَّذِیْ نَعِدُهُمْ اَوْ نَتَوَفَّیَنَّكَ فَاِلَیْنَا یُرْجَعُوْنَ(۷۷)

So you persevere with patience (in your mission). The promise of God is true. Whether We show you some of the punishment We have promised them, or gather you up in death, they have to come back to Us.

So be thou patient; surely God's promise is true. Whether We show thee a part of that We promise them, or We call thee unto Us, to Us they shall be returned.

40:78

وَ لَقَدْ اَرْسَلْنَا رُسُلًا مِّنْ قَبْلِكَ مِنْهُمْ مَّنْ قَصَصْنَا عَلَیْكَ وَ مِنْهُمْ مَّنْ لَّمْ نَقْصُصْ عَلَیْكَؕ-وَ مَا كَانَ لِرَسُوْلٍ اَنْ یَّاْتِیَ بِاٰیَةٍ اِلَّا بِاِذْنِ اللّٰهِۚ-فَاِذَا جَآءَ اَمْرُ اللّٰهِ قُضِیَ بِالْحَقِّ وَ خَسِرَ هُنَالِكَ الْمُبْطِلُوْنَ۠(۷۸)

Surely We have sent apostles before you, some of whose account We have related to you, and that of some We have not told you. But no apostle was given a miracle unless God dispensed. But when the decree of God comes the sentence is passed with justice; and the lovers of vice and vanity will then come to grief.

We sent Messengers before thee; of some We have related to thee, and some We have not related to thee. It was not for any Messenger to bring a sign, save by God's leave. When God's command comes, justly the issue shall be decided; then the vain-doers shall be lost.

40:79

اَللّٰهُ الَّذِیْ جَعَلَ لَكُمُ الْاَنْعَامَ لِتَرْكَبُوْا مِنْهَا وَ مِنْهَا تَاْكُلُوْنَ٘(۷۹)

It is God who made the cattle for you so that some you ride and some you eat.

It is God who appointed for you the cattle, some of them to ride and of some you eat;

40:80

وَ لَكُمْ فِیْهَا مَنَافِعُ وَ لِتَبْلُغُوْا عَلَیْهَا حَاجَةً فِیْ صُدُوْرِكُمْ وَ عَلَیْهَا وَ عَلَى الْفُلْكِ تُحْمَلُوْنَؕ(۸۰)

There are advantages for you in them, so that you may satisfy your needs through them, and may be borne upon them and on ships.

other uses also you have in them; and that on them you may attain a need in your breasts, and upon them and on the ships you are carried.
