Surah Al-Israa Recitation, Translation, and Tafseer - The Holy Quran

17:41

وَ لَقَدْ صَرَّفْنَا فِیْ هٰذَا الْقُرْاٰنِ لِیَذَّكَّرُوْاؕ-وَ مَا یَزِیْدُهُمْ اِلَّا نُفُوْرًا(۴۱)

We have explained (the truth) in various ways in this Qur´an, that they may be warned; but it only increased their refractoriness.

17:42

قُلْ لَّوْ كَانَ مَعَهٗۤ اٰلِهَةٌ كَمَا یَقُوْلُوْنَ اِذًا لَّابْتَغَوْا اِلٰى ذِی الْعَرْشِ سَبِیْلًا(۴۲)

Say: "Had there been other gods with Him, as they assert, they would surely have sought a way (of opposition) against the Lord of the Throne."

17:43

سُبْحٰنَهٗ وَ تَعٰلٰى عَمَّا یَقُوْلُوْنَ عُلُوًّا كَبِیْرًا(۴۳)

Too glorious and high is He, too exalted for what they say!

17:44

تُسَبِّحُ لَهُ السَّمٰوٰتُ السَّبْعُ وَ الْاَرْضُ وَ مَنْ فِیْهِنَّؕ-وَ اِنْ مِّنْ شَیْءٍ اِلَّا یُسَبِّحُ بِحَمْدِهٖ وَ لٰكِنْ لَّا تَفْقَهُوْنَ تَسْبِیْحَهُمْؕ-اِنَّهٗ كَانَ حَلِیْمًا غَفُوْرًا(۴۴)

The seven skies, the earth, and all that lies within them, sing hallelujas to Him. There is nothing that does not chant His praises, but you do not understand their hymns of praise. He is verily clement and forgiving.

17:45

وَ اِذَا قَرَاْتَ الْقُرْاٰنَ جَعَلْنَا بَیْنَكَ وَ بَیْنَ الَّذِیْنَ لَا یُؤْمِنُوْنَ بِالْاٰخِرَةِ حِجَابًا مَّسْتُوْرًاۙ(۴۵)

When you recite the Qur´an, We place a hidden veil between you and those who do not believe in the Hereafter;

17:46

وَّ جَعَلْنَا عَلٰى قُلُوْبِهِمْ اَكِنَّةً اَنْ یَّفْقَهُوْهُ وَ فِیْۤ اٰذَانِهِمْ وَقْرًاؕ-وَ اِذَا ذَكَرْتَ رَبَّكَ فِی الْقُرْاٰنِ وَحْدَهٗ وَلَّوْا عَلٰۤى اَدْبَارِهِمْ نُفُوْرًا(۴۶)

And We put covers over their hearts and deafness in their ears that they should not understand it. So when you invoke your Lord alone in the Qur´an they turn their backs and walk away.

17:47

نَحْنُ اَعْلَمُ بِمَا یَسْتَمِعُوْنَ بِهٖۤ اِذْ یَسْتَمِعُوْنَ اِلَیْكَ وَ اِذْ هُمْ نَجْوٰۤى اِذْ یَقُوْلُ الظّٰلِمُوْنَ اِنْ تَتَّبِعُوْنَ اِلَّا رَجُلًا مَّسْحُوْرًا(۴۷)

We know well with what (intent) they hear you, for when they confer privately the wicked say: "You follow but a man deluded."

17:48

اُنْظُرْ كَیْفَ ضَرَبُوْا لَكَ الْاَمْثَالَ فَضَلُّوْا فَلَا یَسْتَطِیْعُوْنَ سَبِیْلًا(۴۸)

See, what comparisons they coin for you, and go astray, and thus cannot find the way.

17:49

وَ قَالُوْۤا ءَاِذَا كُنَّا عِظَامًا وَّ رُفَاتًا ءَاِنَّا لَمَبْعُوْثُوْنَ خَلْقًا جَدِیْدًا(۴۹)

Yet they say: "When we are turned to bones and bits, shall we be raised as a new creation?"

17:50

قُلْ كُوْنُوْا حِجَارَةً اَوْ حَدِیْدًاۙ(۵۰)

Tell them: "(Even if) you turn to stones or steel,

17:51

اَوْ خَلْقًا مِّمَّا یَكْبُرُ فِیْ صُدُوْرِكُمْۚ-فَسَیَقُوْلُوْنَ مَنْ یُّعِیْدُنَاؕ-قُلِ الَّذِیْ فَطَرَكُمْ اَوَّلَ مَرَّةٍۚ-فَسَیُنْغِضُوْنَ اِلَیْكَ رُءُوْسَهُمْ وَ یَقُوْلُوْنَ مَتٰى هُوَؕ-قُلْ عَسٰۤى اَنْ یَّكُوْنَ قَرِیْبًا(۵۱)

Or some other created thing which may seem to you most difficult (to create)!" They will then say: "Who will revert us back?" Say: "He who originated you in the first place." They will shake their heads at you and say: "When will that be?" Say: "In the near future, perhaps,

17:52

یَوْمَ یَدْعُوْكُمْ فَتَسْتَجِیْبُوْنَ بِحَمْدِهٖ وَ تَظُنُّوْنَ اِنْ لَّبِثْتُمْ اِلَّا قَلِیْلًا۠(۵۲)

"On the day when He will call you, and you will answer with His praises and imagine you did not tarry but a while."

17:53

وَ قُلْ لِّعِبَادِیْ یَقُوْلُوا الَّتِیْ هِیَ اَحْسَنُؕ-اِنَّ الشَّیْطٰنَ یَنْزَغُ بَیْنَهُمْؕ-اِنَّ الشَّیْطٰنَ كَانَ لِلْاِنْسَانِ عَدُوًّا مُّبِیْنًا(۵۳)

Tell My creatures only to speak words that are good. Verily Satan sows dissensions: Satan is indeed the acknowledged enemy of mankind.

17:54

رَبُّكُمْ اَعْلَمُ بِكُمْؕ-اِنْ یَّشَاْ یَرْحَمْكُمْ اَوْ اِنْ یَّشَاْ یُعَذِّبْكُمْؕ-وَ مَاۤ اَرْسَلْنٰكَ عَلَیْهِمْ وَكِیْلًا(۵۴)

Your Lord knows you better: He may have mercy on you if He please, or punish you if He will. Yet We have not sent you as warden over them.

17:55

وَ رَبُّكَ اَعْلَمُ بِمَنْ فِی السَّمٰوٰتِ وَ الْاَرْضِؕ-وَ لَقَدْ فَضَّلْنَا بَعْضَ النَّبِیّٖنَ عَلٰى بَعْضٍ وَّ اٰتَیْنَا دَاوٗدَ زَبُوْرًا(۵۵)

Your Lord knows whoever is in the heavens and the earth. We exalted some of the prophets over the others; and to David We gave the Book of Psalms.

17:56

قُلِ ادْعُوا الَّذِیْنَ زَعَمْتُمْ مِّنْ دُوْنِهٖ فَلَا یَمْلِكُوْنَ كَشْفَ الضُّرِّ عَنْكُمْ وَ لَا تَحْوِیْلًا(۵۶)

Say: "Call those whom you imagine to be gods besides Him; yet they have no power to relieve you of any distress or to avert it."

17:57

اُولٰٓىٕكَ الَّذِیْنَ یَدْعُوْنَ یَبْتَغُوْنَ اِلٰى رَبِّهِمُ الْوَسِیْلَةَ اَیُّهُمْ اَقْرَبُ وَ یَرْجُوْنَ رَحْمَتَهٗ وَ یَخَافُوْنَ عَذَابَهٗؕ-اِنَّ عَذَابَ رَبِّكَ كَانَ مَحْذُوْرًا(۵۷)

Those they invoke themselves seek the way to their Lord, (striving) which one of them shall be nearest (to Him); and hope for His grace, and dread His punishment. Indeed, the punishment of your Lord is to be feared!

17:58

وَ اِنْ مِّنْ قَرْیَةٍ اِلَّا نَحْنُ مُهْلِكُوْهَا قَبْلَ یَوْمِ الْقِیٰمَةِ اَوْ مُعَذِّبُوْهَا عَذَابًا شَدِیْدًاؕ-كَانَ ذٰلِكَ فِی الْكِتٰبِ مَسْطُوْرًا(۵۸)

There is not a habitation We shall not destroy before the Day of Resurrection, or not inflict severe punishment upon it. This is in accordance with the law (of God).

17:59

وَ مَا مَنَعَنَاۤ اَنْ نُّرْسِلَ بِالْاٰیٰتِ اِلَّاۤ اَنْ كَذَّبَ بِهَا الْاَوَّلُوْنَؕ-وَ اٰتَیْنَا ثَمُوْدَ النَّاقَةَ مُبْصِرَةً فَظَلَمُوْا بِهَاؕ-وَ مَا نُرْسِلُ بِالْاٰیٰتِ اِلَّا تَخْوِیْفًا(۵۹)

Nothing could stop Us from sending signs except that the earlier people had rejected them as lies. We sent to Thamud the she-camel as a token to make it clear to them, but they treated her cruelly; and We send signs only to deter.

17:60

وَ اِذْ قُلْنَا لَكَ اِنَّ رَبَّكَ اَحَاطَ بِالنَّاسِؕ-وَ مَا جَعَلْنَا الرُّءْیَا الَّتِیْۤ اَرَیْنٰكَ اِلَّا فِتْنَةً لِّلنَّاسِ وَ الشَّجَرَةَ الْمَلْعُوْنَةَ فِی الْقُرْاٰنِؕ-وَ نُخَوِّفُهُمْۙ-فَمَا یَزِیْدُهُمْ اِلَّا طُغْیَانًا كَبِیْرًا۠(۶۰)

When We said to you: "Verily your Lord circumscribes mankind," and showed you the vision and the accursed tree of the Qur´an, it was as a bone of contention for men. Thus do We (instil) fear in them; but they only transgress the more.

17:61

وَ اِذْ قُلْنَا لِلْمَلٰٓىٕكَةِ اسْجُدُوْا لِاٰدَمَ فَسَجَدُوْۤا اِلَّاۤ اِبْلِیْسَؕ-قَالَ ءَاَسْجُدُ لِمَنْ خَلَقْتَ طِیْنًاۚ(۶۱)

When We asked the angels to bow before Adam, they all bowed but Iblis, who said: "Can I bow before him whom You created from clay?"

17:62

قَالَ اَرَءَیْتَكَ هٰذَا الَّذِیْ كَرَّمْتَ عَلَیَّ٘-لَىٕنْ اَخَّرْتَنِ اِلٰى یَوْمِ الْقِیٰمَةِ لَاَحْتَنِكَنَّ ذُرِّیَّتَهٗۤ اِلَّا قَلِیْلًا(۶۲)

(And) said: "Look! This is what you have honoured above me! If You defer (my term) till the Day of Resurrection, I will bring his progeny into complete subjugation, barring a few."

17:63

قَالَ اذْهَبْ فَمَنْ تَبِعَكَ مِنْهُمْ فَاِنَّ جَهَنَّمَ جَزَآؤُكُمْ جَزَآءً مَّوْفُوْرًا(۶۳)

(And God) said: "Away! Whosoever of them follows you will surely have Hell with you as requital -- an ample recompense.

17:64

وَ اسْتَفْزِزْ مَنِ اسْتَطَعْتَ مِنْهُمْ بِصَوْتِكَ وَ اَجْلِبْ عَلَیْهِمْ بِخَیْلِكَ وَ رَجِلِكَ وَ شَارِكْهُمْ فِی الْاَمْوَالِ وَ الْاَوْلَادِ وَعِدْهُمْؕ-وَ مَا یَعِدُهُمُ الشَّیْطٰنُ اِلَّا غُرُوْرًا(۶۴)

Mislead any of them you may with your voice, attack them with your cavalry and soldiers on foot, share their wealth and children with them, and make promises to them." -- But the promises of Satan are nothing but deceit.

17:65

اِنَّ عِبَادِیْ لَیْسَ لَكَ عَلَیْهِمْ سُلْطٰنٌؕ-وَ كَفٰى بِرَبِّكَ وَكِیْلًا(۶۵)

"You will surely have no power over My devotees: Your Lord is sufficient as their protector."

17:66

رَبُّكُمُ الَّذِیْ یُزْجِیْ لَكُمُ الْفُلْكَ فِی الْبَحْرِ لِتَبْتَغُوْا مِنْ فَضْلِهٖؕ-اِنَّهٗ كَانَ بِكُمْ رَحِیْمًا(۶۶)

It is your Lord who drives your ships across the seas that you may seek of His bounty. He is verily kind to you.

17:67

وَ اِذَا مَسَّكُمُ الضُّرُّ فِی الْبَحْرِ ضَلَّ مَنْ تَدْعُوْنَ اِلَّاۤ اِیَّاهُۚ-فَلَمَّا نَجّٰىكُمْ اِلَى الْبَرِّ اَعْرَضْتُمْؕ-وَ كَانَ الْاِنْسَانُ كَفُوْرًا(۶۷)

When a calamity befalls you on the sea, all those you invoke fail you except Him. But when He brings you safely to the shore, you turn away, for man is most ungrateful.

17:68

اَفَاَمِنْتُمْ اَنْ یَّخْسِفَ بِكُمْ جَانِبَ الْبَرِّ اَوْ یُرْسِلَ عَلَیْكُمْ حَاصِبًا ثُمَّ لَا تَجِدُوْا لَكُمْ وَكِیْلًاۙ(۶۸)

Have you then become so sure that He will not cleave the earth and sink you in it by the shore, or send a gale against you, when you will not find any protector.

17:69

اَمْ اَمِنْتُمْ اَنْ یُّعِیْدَكُمْ فِیْهِ تَارَةً اُخْرٰى فَیُرْسِلَ عَلَیْكُمْ قَاصِفًا مِّنَ الرِّیْحِ فَیُغْرِقَكُمْ بِمَا كَفَرْتُمْۙ-ثُمَّ لَا تَجِدُوْا لَكُمْ عَلَیْنَا بِهٖ تَبِیْعًا(۶۹)

Or you feel so secure that He will not send you back (to sea) again or send a gravel-hurtling storm against you, and drown you for your ingratitude? Then you will not find any avenger against Us.

17:70

وَ لَقَدْ كَرَّمْنَا بَنِیْۤ اٰدَمَ وَ حَمَلْنٰهُمْ فِی الْبَرِّ وَ الْبَحْرِ وَ رَزَقْنٰهُمْ مِّنَ الطَّیِّبٰتِ وَ فَضَّلْنٰهُمْ عَلٰى كَثِیْرٍ مِّمَّنْ خَلَقْنَا تَفْضِیْلًا۠(۷۰)

Indeed We have honoured the children of Adam, and carried them over land and sea, provided them with good things for their sustenance, and exalted them over many of Our creatures.

17:71

یَوْمَ نَدْعُوْا كُلَّ اُنَاسٍۭ بِاِمَامِهِمْۚ-فَمَنْ اُوْتِیَ كِتٰبَهٗ بِیَمِیْنِهٖ فَاُولٰٓىٕكَ یَقْرَءُوْنَ كِتٰبَهُمْ وَ لَا یُظْلَمُوْنَ فَتِیْلًا(۷۱)

The day We shall summon all men with their leaders, whosoever is given his record in his right hand will be able to read his account, and none will be wronged the breadth of a thread.

17:72

وَ مَنْ كَانَ فِیْ هٰذِهٖۤ اَعْمٰى فَهُوَ فِی الْاٰخِرَةِ اَعْمٰى وَ اَضَلُّ سَبِیْلًا(۷۲)

But whoso has been blind in this world shall be blind in the world to come, even farther astray from the path.

17:73

وَ اِنْ كَادُوْا لَیَفْتِنُوْنَكَ عَنِ الَّذِیْۤ اَوْحَیْنَاۤ اِلَیْكَ لِتَفْتَرِیَ عَلَیْنَا غَیْرَهٗ ﳓ وَ اِذًا لَّاتَّخَذُوْكَ خَلِیْلًا(۷۳)

They had almost led you away from what has been revealed to you, that you may invent things about Us besides those revealed, when they would have taken you as friend.

17:74

وَ لَوْ لَاۤ اَنْ ثَبَّتْنٰكَ لَقَدْ كِدْتَّ تَرْكَنُ اِلَیْهِمْ شَیْــٴًـا قَلِیْلًاۗۙ(۷۴)

If We had not kept you constant you had almost leaned towards them.

17:75

اِذًا لَّاَذَقْنٰكَ ضِعْفَ الْحَیٰوةِ وَ ضِعْفَ الْمَمَاتِ ثُمَّ لَا تَجِدُ لَكَ عَلَیْنَا نَصِیْرًا(۷۵)

In that case We would have made you taste a double anguish of life and a double anguish of death, and then you would not have been able to find a helper against Us for yourself.

17:76

وَ اِنْ كَادُوْا لَیَسْتَفِزُّوْنَكَ مِنَ الْاَرْضِ لِیُخْرِجُوْكَ مِنْهَا وَ اِذًا لَّا یَلْبَثُوْنَ خِلٰفَكَ اِلَّا قَلِیْلًا(۷۶)

They had nearly expelled you from the land and driven you away from it. But then, they too would have stayed but a little after you.

17:77

سُنَّةَ مَنْ قَدْ اَرْسَلْنَا قَبْلَكَ مِنْ رُّسُلِنَا وَ لَا تَجِدُ لِسُنَّتِنَا تَحْوِیْلًا۠(۷۷)

This has been Our way with the apostles whom We sent before you. You will not find any variation in Our line of action.

17:78

اَقِمِ الصَّلٰوةَ لِدُلُوْكِ الشَّمْسِ اِلٰى غَسَقِ الَّیْلِ وَ قُرْاٰنَ الْفَجْرِؕ-اِنَّ قُرْاٰنَ الْفَجْرِ كَانَ مَشْهُوْدًا(۷۸)

Observe the service of prayer from the sun´s declining from the meridian to the darkening of the night, and the recitation at dawn. Indeed the Recitation at dawn is palpably evident.

17:79

وَ مِنَ الَّیْلِ فَتَهَجَّدْ بِهٖ نَافِلَةً لَّكَ ﳓ عَسٰۤى اَنْ یَّبْعَثَكَ رَبُّكَ مَقَامًا مَّحْمُوْدًا(۷۹)

Say a supererogatory prayer at the hour of the first watch: Your Lord may raise you to a most exalted station.

17:80

وَ قُلْ رَّبِّ اَدْخِلْنِیْ مُدْخَلَ صِدْقٍ وَّ اَخْرِجْنِیْ مُخْرَ جَ صِدْقٍ وَّ اجْعَلْ لِّیْ مِنْ لَّدُنْكَ سُلْطٰنًا نَّصِیْرًا(۸۰)

And pray: "O my Lord, let my entry be with honour, and let my exit be with honour, and grant me power from You which would help (sustain) me."
