Surah al-Balad

اَلْبَـلَد
20 Ayaat    مکیۃ


90:0
بِسْمِ اللّٰهِ الرَّحْمٰنِ الرَّحِیْمِ
In the name of Allah, most benevolent, ever-merciful.

In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.
90:1
لَاۤ اُقْسِمُ بِهٰذَا الْبَلَدِۙ(۱)
I CALL THIS earth to witness --

I do call to witness this City;-
90:2
وَ اَنْتَ حِلٌّۢ بِهٰذَا الْبَلَدِۙ(۲)
And you are free to live upon it, --

And thou art a freeman of this City;-
90:3
وَ وَالِدٍ وَّ مَا وَلَدَۙ(۳)
And the parent and the offspring,

And (the mystic ties of) parent and child;-
90:4
لَقَدْ خَلَقْنَا الْاِنْسَانَ فِیْ كَبَدٍؕ(۴)
That We created man in toil and trouble.

Verily We have created man into toil and struggle.
90:5
اَیَحْسَبُ اَنْ لَّنْ یَّقْدِرَ عَلَیْهِ اَحَدٌۘ(۵)
Does he think that no one has power over him?

Thinketh he, that none hath power over him?
90:6
یَقُوْلُ اَهْلَكْتُ مَالًا لُّبَدًاؕ(۶)
He says: "I have wasted a great deal of wealth."

He may say (boastfully); Wealth have I squandered in abundance!
90:7
اَیَحْسَبُ اَنْ لَّمْ یَرَهٗۤ اَحَدٌؕ(۷)
Does he think that no one sees him?

Thinketh he that none beholdeth him?
90:8
اَلَمْ نَجْعَلْ لَّهٗ عَیْنَیْنِۙ(۸)
Did We not give him two eyes,

Have We not made for him a pair of eyes?-
90:9
وَ لِسَانًا وَّ شَفَتَیْنِۙ(۹)
One tongue, and two lips,

And a tongue, and a pair of lips?-
90:10
وَ هَدَیْنٰهُ النَّجْدَیْنِۚ(۱۰)
And showed him two highways (of good and evil)?

And shown him the two highways?
90:11
فَلَا اقْتَحَمَ الْعَقَبَةَ٘ۖ(۱۱)
But he could not scale the steep ascent.

But he hath made no haste on the path that is steep.
90:12
وَ مَاۤ اَدْرٰىكَ مَا الْعَقَبَةُؕ(۱۲)
How will you comprehend what the Steep ascent is? --

And what will explain to thee the path that is steep?-
90:13
فَكُّ رَقَبَةٍۙ(۱۳)
To free a neck (from the burden of debt or slavery),

(It is:) freeing the bondman;
90:14
اَوْ اِطْعٰمٌ فِیْ یَوْمٍ ذِیْ مَسْغَبَةٍۙ(۱۴)
Or to feed in times of famine

Or the giving of food in a day of privation
90:15
یَّتِیْمًا ذَا مَقْرَبَةٍۙ(۱۵)
The orphan near in relationship,

To the orphan with claims of relationship,
90:16
اَوْ مِسْكِیْنًا ذَا مَتْرَبَةٍؕ(۱۶)
Or the poor in distress;

Or to the indigent (down) in the dust.
90:17
ثُمَّ كَانَ مِنَ الَّذِیْنَ اٰمَنُوْا وَ تَوَاصَوْا بِالصَّبْرِ وَ تَوَاصَوْا بِالْمَرْحَمَةِؕ(۱۷)
And to be of those who believe, and urge upon one another to persevere, and urge upon each other to be kind.

Then will he be of those who believe, and enjoin patience, (constancy, and self-restraint), and enjoin deeds of kindness and compassion.
90:18
اُولٰٓىٕكَ اَصْحٰبُ الْمَیْمَنَةِؕ(۱۸)
They are the people of the right hand (and will succeed).

Such are the Companions of the Right Hand.
90:19
وَ الَّذِیْنَ كَفَرُوْا بِاٰیٰتِنَا هُمْ اَصْحٰبُ الْمَشْــٴَـمَةِؕ(۱۹)
But those who deny Our revelations are the people of the left hand:

But those who reject Our Signs, they are the (unhappy) Companions of the Left Hand.
90:20
عَلَیْهِمْ نَارٌ مُّؤْصَدَةٌ۠(۲۰)
The Fire will vault them over.

On them will be Fire vaulted over (all round).
